How do I prepare, lay & maintain my turf?
Prior to Laying
- Level the ground (laying turf is like carpet) use a rake to remove all lumps, rocks building debris.
- Spread new topsoil if needed, a properly formulated turf underlay mix to depth of 30-50mm is strongly recommended to hold the moisture in the soil, particularly where the topsoil has been removed.
- Avoid over watering as can make laying messy.
- Fertilise ground with NPK fertiliser (eg. Crop King 88 with a wetting agent).
Laying of Turf
- Select a straight line to work from (eg. Path, Driveway)
- Lay slabs across the slope in a brick laying pattern.
- Trim edges with garden knife/spade if required.
- Roll for a smooth final finish and good soil contact.
Watering of Turf
- Give lawn a good soak immediately after laying (equivalent to 25mm of rain – the soil under the slabs of turf should be wet).
- For the next 2 weeks do not allow soil under turf to dry out.
- Always soak lawn (equal to 20mm rain) rather than lots of little waterings, so deep roots develop.
- Once lawn is established, give a good soak once per week.
Mowing, Fertilisation & Weed Prevention
- First mow when the new lawn is 60mm tall.
- Do not mow lawn lower than 30mm in warm months and 50mm in cool months (to avoid build up of a thatch).
- Fertilize every 3 months, watering in all fertiliser (utilise rain whenever possible).
- Maintain a healthy dense lawn; it is the most effective means of weed control – giving seed little chance to germinate.
- Top dress if necessary, use sand, not soil, and don’t smother the grass.
- In dry times use of soil wetting agents may help to retain moisture in the topsoil.
By following the above instructions your
lawn will be established within weeks!
